The 12 Zodiac Signs: Elements, Modalities and Meaning in Your Chart

The 12 zodiac signs are twelve 30-degree sections of the sky’s path around the Earth, from Aries to Pisces, and in astrology each one describes a style: how a planet behaves when it stands there. Your Sun sign is one of them, but every planet in your chart has a sign, so you are a mix of several.

That is why the signs matter more than horoscope columns suggest. Mars in Aries and Mars in Virgo are the same drive wearing different clothes: one charges, the other refines. Learn the signs and every placement in your chart starts to read like a sentence.

How the signs are built

Each sign is a combination of three qualities, and most of a sign’s character follows from them.

  • Element: fire, earth, air or water. Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is spirit and initiative. Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) is the body, work and what lasts. Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) is ideas, language and connection. Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) is feeling, memory and closeness.
  • Modality: cardinal, fixed or mutable. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) start each season and start things. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) hold the middle of a season and hold on. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) end a season and adapt.
  • Polarity. Fire and air signs are called masculine or diurnal, outgoing; earth and water signs feminine or nocturnal, receptive. The words are old labels for direction of energy, not gender.

Each sign also has a ruling planet, the planet most at home there. Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces have two: a traditional ruler (Mars, Saturn and Jupiter) and a modern one (Pluto, Uranus and Neptune). Many astrologers read both.

The twelve signs

The dates below are when the Sun is usually in each sign. The exact day the Sun changes sign shifts by a day or so from year to year.

Aries: the initiator

March 21 to April 19. Cardinal fire, ruled by Mars. Aries goes first: direct, brave, impatient with waiting. It teaches you to act before you feel ready. Its edge is starting fights or projects it has not thought through.

Taurus: the steady one

April 20 to May 20. Fixed earth, ruled by Venus. Taurus is the senses and staying power: comfort, good food, loyalty, things built slowly and well. Its edge is holding on to the familiar after it has stopped serving you.

Gemini: the connector

May 21 to June 20. Mutable air, ruled by Mercury. Gemini is curiosity in motion: questions, conversation, two ideas at once. It notices links others miss. Its edge is spreading attention so thin that nothing lands.

Cancer: the protector

June 21 to July 22. Cardinal water, ruled by the Moon. Cancer feels the room before it reads it and builds homes wherever it goes: for family, friends, anyone who needs one. Its edge is retreating into its shell when hurt.

Leo: the radiant one

July 23 to August 22. Fixed fire, ruled by the Sun. Leo creates, performs, leads from the heart and loves generously. It wants to be seen, and it makes others feel seen too. Its edge is needing applause to feel worthwhile.

Virgo: the refiner

August 23 to September 22. Mutable earth, ruled by Mercury. Virgo notices what could be better and quietly makes it so: skill, craft, care through usefulness. Its edge is turning that eye for flaws on itself.

Libra: the balancer

September 23 to October 22. Cardinal air, ruled by Venus. Libra relates: it weighs both sides, looks for fairness and has a fine sense of beauty and manners. Its edge is keeping the peace at its own expense.

Scorpio: the deep one

October 23 to November 21. Fixed water, ruled by Mars traditionally and Pluto in modern astrology. Scorpio wants the truth under the surface, and its loyalty, once given, is absolute. Its edge is control when it feels exposed.

Sagittarius: the seeker

November 22 to December 21. Mutable fire, ruled by Jupiter. Sagittarius wants meaning and horizon: travel, study, big questions, honest answers. Its edge is leaving before the details are done.

Capricorn: the builder

December 22 to January 19. Cardinal earth, ruled by Saturn. Capricorn plays the long game: ambition, responsibility and a dry humour that surprises people. It gets better with age. Its edge is mistaking worth for work.

Aquarius: the independent

January 20 to February 18. Fixed air, ruled by Saturn traditionally and Uranus in modern astrology. Aquarius thinks in systems and communities, and it keeps its own mind. Its edge is a coolness that can read as distance.

Pisces: the empath

February 19 to March 20. Mutable water, ruled by Jupiter traditionally and Neptune in modern astrology. Pisces is imagination and compassion, a soul with few walls. Its edge is losing its own shape in other people’s needs.

Styles, not stereotypes

Sign descriptions turn into stereotypes when an archetype is squeezed into a joke: Geminis are two-faced, Virgos are neat freaks, Scorpios are vengeful. The real archetype is broader and kinder. Gemini sees two sides because it is curious about both; Virgo cares about order because it cares about getting things right for people.

Two things keep the signs honest. First, a sign colours whichever planet is in it, and the planet decides the subject. Mars in Libra is not “a Libra”; it is drive that fights for fairness and hates an ugly scene. Venus in Libra is love that wants grace and partnership. Second, some popular descriptions come from modern rulers alone. The “spacey Pisces” image leans on Neptune, while the traditional ruler, Jupiter, makes Pisces generous, wise and expansive as well.

Tropical and sidereal zodiacs

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which starts 0 degrees Aries at the March equinox. Its signs are tied to the seasons: Aries is the first month of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, Cancer begins at the June solstice, and so on.

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which ties the signs to the background stars. Because the Earth’s axis slowly wobbles (precession), the two zodiacs drift apart by about one degree every 72 years. The gap, called the ayanamsa, is now a little over 24 degrees on the most widely used Indian standard.

The practical result: if a planet is in roughly the first 24 degrees of a sign in your Western chart, it is usually in the previous sign in a Vedic chart. A Sun at 10 degrees Aries is a Pisces Sun in sidereal terms. Neither zodiac is wrong. They answer different questions, one measured from the seasons and one from the stars, and Celestio uses the tropical zodiac.

Ophiuchus and the “13th sign”

Every few years a story claims NASA added a 13th sign, Ophiuchus, and changed everyone’s zodiac. It did not. The Sun does pass in front of the constellation Ophiuchus each year, roughly from late November to mid-December, and the constellations are all different sizes. In 2016 a NASA spokesperson put it plainly: NASA had not changed any zodiac signs; it had simply done the math, and it studies astronomy, not astrology.

The zodiac signs are twelve equal sections of the ecliptic, not the constellations that share their names. The tropical zodiac has never been tied to the constellations, so Ophiuchus does not move your sign.

Reading the signs across your chart

Start with the signs that hold the most weight: your Sun, Moon and rising sign, then the sign holding the most planets. Count elements and modalities too. A chart with six planets in earth and none in fire feels very different from the reverse, whatever the Sun sign says.

Here is a simple example. Sun in Gemini, Moon in Cancer, Venus in Taurus, Mars in Gemini. Gemini twice gives a quick, talkative, curious person who thinks out loud. The Cancer Moon wants a home base and a few people who really know them. Venus in Taurus loves slowly and loyally, with a strong pull toward comfort. Read together, this is someone who is chatty and social on the outside, and private, steady and tender underneath. If three or more planets share a sign, that sign may describe you better than your Sun does. Our guide to stelliums explains why. And the planet that rules your rising sign, your chart ruler, carries its own sign’s style through the whole chart.

Frequently asked questions

What do cardinal, fixed and mutable mean in astrology?

Cardinal, fixed and mutable are the three modalities, and each describes how a zodiac sign moves. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) begin the seasons and like to start things. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) sit mid-season and like to sustain and hold. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) end the seasons and like to adapt and change direction.

Did NASA change my zodiac sign?

No, NASA did not change anyone’s zodiac sign. In 2016 a NASA spokesperson said the agency had not changed any signs and studies astronomy, not astrology. The Sun passes through the constellation Ophiuchus each year, but Western astrology’s signs are twelve equal sections measured from the March equinox, not constellations, so your sign stays the same.

Why is my sign different in Vedic astrology?

Your sign is often different in Vedic astrology because it uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. The two are now about 24 degrees apart. If your Sun is in roughly the first 24 degrees of a sign in a Western chart, it usually falls in the previous sign in a Vedic chart.

What does it mean to be born on the cusp?

Being born on the cusp means you were born near the day the Sun changed signs, and the exact day shifts slightly each year. Your Sun is still in one sign or the other, never both. A chart drawn for your date, time and place shows which one, and the degree tells you how close to the boundary it sits.
