What's My Venus Sign? Love Style, Values and What You're Drawn To

Your Venus sign is the zodiac sign Venus was in when you were born. It describes how you love and like to be loved, what you find beautiful, and what you value: the qualities that draw you to a person, a place or a way of life.

Your Sun sign says who you are; your Venus sign says what delights you. That is why two people with the same Sun can want completely different things in love.

What Venus describes in a chart

Venus is the planet of attraction, affection, pleasure and harmony. In a birth chart it shows:

  • Your love style: how you show affection and what makes you feel chosen.
  • Your taste: the kind of beauty, comfort and style you are drawn to.
  • Your values: what feels worth having, including how you enjoy money and the things it buys.
  • How you make peace: your instinct for getting along, in friendship as much as romance.

Traditional astrology calls Venus the lesser benefic, the planet that brings ease and good things in smaller measure than Jupiter. Modern astrology reads it more psychologically, as your style of attraction and connection. Both agree on the core: Venus is what you love and how you love.

How to find your Venus sign

Enter your birth date, place and time in your free birth chart; your Venus sign is listed with your other planets. A birth time is rarely needed for Venus, because it usually spends about a month in each sign.

Venus is never more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. So your Venus sign is always your Sun sign or within two signs either side of it. An Aries Sun can have Venus in Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus or Gemini, and nowhere else.

Venus retrograde in a birth chart

Venus turns retrograde (appears to move backwards from Earth) once every 19 months or so. Its full cycle with the Sun lasts 584 days, and each retrograde lasts about six weeks. Venus is retrograde roughly 7% of the time, so about one person in fourteen is born with it.

A retrograde Venus does not mean bad luck in love. Modern astrologers read it as values and affection developed privately: you may take longer to trust your own taste, or love in ways that don't follow the script. Traditional astrologers treat retrograde motion as one condition among several, weighed with sign, house and aspects, never a verdict on its own. One more detail: Venus retrogrades return to nearly the same zodiac degrees every eight years, tracing a five-pointed pattern around the zodiac.

Where Venus is strongest and weakest

Traditional astrology rates how comfortable each planet is in each sign, a system called dignity:

  • At home (domicile): Taurus and Libra, the signs Venus rules. Love here is easy, sensual or graceful.
  • Exalted: Pisces, where Venus's warmth is at its most generous and romantic.
  • In detriment: Scorpio and Aries, the signs opposite its own. Love is intense or impatient rather than smooth.
  • In fall: Virgo, opposite its exaltation. Affection is shown through care, attention and practical help.

Modern astrologers avoid calling any placement bad. Venus in Scorpio loves deeply and all the way; Venus in Virgo shows love by noticing what you need. The traditional point still holds: some Venus signs get Venus's results easily, and some work for them.

A worked example

Take someone with the Sun in Gemini and Venus in Cancer in the 7th house. The Gemini Sun is quick, social and curious. But what draws them in love is not banter alone: Venus in Cancer wants someone who feels like home, remembers the small things and wants to build a nest. The 7th house puts that need for closeness squarely into committed partnership. Read only the Sun sign and you'd expect a flirt; read Venus and you find a homemaker.

Venus in Aquarius

Venus in Pisces

Romantic, imaginative and compassionate. You love wholeheartedly and see the best in people.

Venus beyond its sign

Your Venus house shows where you look for pleasure and connection: in the 5th, romance and creative play; in the 2nd, comfort and possessions; in the 10th, beauty and charm in your working life. Aspects colour it too. Venus tied to Saturn often loves cautiously and loyally; Venus tied to Mars blends affection with desire; Venus tied to Neptune idealises. Read how aspects work.

In relationships, astrologers look at how your Venus meets the other person's chart, especially their Mars, Sun, Moon and Ascendant. See Venus–Mars synastry and, for your own drive and desire, your Mars sign. A compatibility report reads both charts together.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Venus sign more important than my Sun sign for love?

For love and attraction, your Venus sign usually tells you more than your Sun sign. The Sun describes your identity; Venus describes what you are drawn to and how you show affection. Your Moon sign adds what you need to feel safe, and your Mars sign adds desire and pursuit. Read together, those three describe your love life far better than the Sun alone.

Can my Venus sign be different from my Sun sign?

Your Venus sign is often different from your Sun sign, but never far away. Venus is never more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so it is always in your Sun sign or within two signs on either side. A Leo Sun, for example, can only have Venus in Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo or Libra.

What does a retrograde Venus in my birth chart mean?

A retrograde Venus in a birth chart means Venus appeared to move backwards when you were born, which happens about 7% of the time. It does not mean you are unlucky in love. It is usually read as values and affection that develop inwardly and on your own terms, often more slowly. Its sign, house and aspects say far more about your love life than retrograde motion alone.

Does Venus only describe romance?

Venus describes far more than romance. It shows what you find beautiful, what you value and enjoy, how you make friends, and how you get along with people generally. That is why it also says something about style, art, pleasure and how you like to spend. Its house shows where those tastes and values matter most in your life.

Which Venus signs are most compatible?

Venus signs in the same element usually understand each other easily: fire with fire, earth with earth, air with air, water with water. Complementary elements often work too, fire with air and earth with water. But compatibility rests on the whole of both charts, especially how one person's Venus meets the other's Mars, Moon and Sun, not on two Venus signs alone.
