Venus–Mars Synastry: Attraction, Chemistry and How It Plays Out
Venus–Mars synastry is astrology's classic signature of attraction. Here is how each aspect feels, why direction matters, and what chemistry needs in order to last.
By Celestio ·

Venus–Mars synastry is any aspect between one person's Venus and the other person's Mars, and astrologers read it as attraction: romantic and physical chemistry. Venus describes what you find beautiful and how you give and receive affection; Mars describes desire, pursuit and how you go after what you want. When one person's Venus meets the other's Mars, each tends to feel noticed in exactly the way they want.
That is the headline. The detail is where it gets interesting: which aspect it is, whose Venus and whose Mars, which signs they are in, and what else the two charts are doing. This guide covers all four, with a worked example.
Why Venus and Mars mean chemistry
Venus draws in; Mars moves toward. Venus asks "what do I love?", Mars asks "what will I go after?". Across two charts, those two questions answer each other. The Venus person feels wanted and is drawn to the Mars person's directness and energy. The Mars person feels motivated and is drawn to the Venus person's charm and warmth. Often it is not conscious at all, just a heightened awareness whenever the other person is in the room.
Astrologers have called Venus–Mars contacts the classic attraction aspects for a very long time. Ptolemy, in the 2nd century, already said that Mars with Venus brings people together "through love". He added, bluntly, that such associations "are unsure and flourish only briefly". Modern astrologers drop his moralising but keep the warning: Venus–Mars is a spark, not a foundation. More on that below.
Direction: whose Venus, whose Mars
"Venus square Mars" is half a sentence. It matters whose planet is whose.
In "my Venus to your Mars", I am drawn to your physicality and drive, and you are drawn to my charm and receptiveness. The Mars person, whatever their gender, tends to take the more active, pursuing role in that contact. Swap the direction and the roles swap too. A couple with only one Venus–Mars contact often has a clear pursuer and a clear pursued.
When both directions are present, your Venus to their Mars and their Venus to your Mars, astrologers call it a double contact. Attraction then runs both ways, and both people pursue and are pursued. That mutuality is one of the strongest chemistry signatures between two charts.
Keep gender out of it. Venus is not "the woman's planet" and Mars is not "the man's". Everyone has both, and in synastry the roles follow the planets, not the people.
Venus–Mars aspect by aspect
The angle between the two planets sets the flavour. Astrologers use tighter orbs between two charts than within one: a contact within about 3° is strong and unmistakable, within about 6° it is background colour.
Conjunction (0°): fusion
The most magnetic Venus–Mars contact. The Venus person feels like exactly what the Mars person wants; the Mars person cannot help going after them. The attraction is obvious to everyone, including friends. At its best, both feel chosen. At its least mature, one person can feel swallowed by the other's intensity.
Opposition (180°): magnetic polarity
A push and pull. The attraction is unmistakable and comes with a clear sense of difference: each has something the other lacks. This is "opposites attract" in its truest form. Over time, the same differences that spark it can become friction, unless both people learn to enjoy the other side rather than correct it.
Square (90°): heat with friction
The hottest and most complicated contact: "I want you, and you drive me mad." The two planets sit in signs of the same mode but different elements, so desire and timing clash. The Venus person may feel the Mars person comes on too strong; the Mars person may feel the Venus person is impossible to read. Squares keep a relationship from going stale. They ask for good communication, or the highs and lows become a cycle.
Trine (120°) and sextile (60°): easy attraction
The smoothest contacts. Attraction is mutual, playful and uncomplicated, with less insistence and competition than the hard aspects. The Venus person feels appreciated without effort; the Mars person feels welcomed rather than having to chase. What these contacts lack in drama they make up in ease.

Compare chartsSigns and elements: the style of the chemistry
The aspect sets the angle; the signs set the style. Compare the element of one person's Venus with the element of the other's Mars:
- Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): bold, spontaneous, physical. Wants it now.
- Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): sensual, slow-building, loyal. Wants it to be real.
- Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): flirtatious, verbal, playful. Starts in the head.
- Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): intense, intuitive, deep. Wants to be felt.
A Venus and Mars in the same element tend to want the same pace. In different elements, the attraction is just as real, but the styles clash: air wants to talk about desire, water wants to feel it; fire wants to act now, earth wants to take its time. A mismatch is not a dealbreaker; it tells you what each person has to learn about the other.
A worked example: Venus in Taurus square Mars in Leo
Say Sam's Venus is at 10° Taurus and Alex's Mars is at 12° Leo. That is a Venus–Mars square within 2°, fixed earth against fixed fire.
Alex pursues boldly and theatrically: big gestures, public attention, no hiding the interest. Sam is captivated and also wants a slower, more sensual pace, and can feel rushed. Both signs are fixed, so neither bends easily. Arguments can be heated, and so is the attraction, which tends to be persistent rather than fleeting.
Now look at the other direction. If Alex's Venus and Sam's Mars also make an aspect, the chemistry is mutual and the pursuer role passes back and forth. If they do not, Alex is likely to remain the one who chases. Either way, how this square plays out over years depends less on Venus and Mars than on the rest of the chart.
What chemistry needs in order to last
Venus–Mars is a starting condition, not an outcome. Astrologers who study long relationships separate two groups of contacts:
- Chemistry contacts: Venus–Mars, Mars–Ascendant, and Uranus or Pluto touching Venus or the Moon. These create the spark.
- Staying-power contacts: Sun–Moon, Moon–Moon, Venus–Saturn, and Saturn touching personal planets. These create the bond.
Chemistry tends to last when it is supported by the second group. The long-term compatibility guide covers those contacts, and Moon compatibility covers the emotional side.
It also works the other way round. Venus–Mars is not required for attraction. Contacts to the Ascendant, a Sun–Moon conjunction or a Pluto contact can create a strong pull with no Venus–Mars aspect at all.
Between friends and family, the same contact reads differently. Venus–Mars between a parent and child, or two friends, describes warmth meeting energy: one person's affection gets the other moving, and the other person's drive delights the first.
Frequently asked questions
What does Venus conjunct Mars mean in synastry?
Venus conjunct Mars in synastry means one person's Venus and the other person's Mars are within a few degrees of each other, usually in the same sign. Counted by degree, a conjunction can also span a sign boundary, such as 29° Leo and 1° Virgo, though it then mixes two styles. It is the most magnetic attraction contact between two charts: the Venus person feels desired, and the Mars person feels compelled to pursue. Both people usually feel it, and the Mars person tends to take the more active role.
Does it matter whose Venus and whose Mars?
Yes, direction matters in Venus–Mars synastry. The Mars person tends to pursue and the Venus person tends to attract and receive, whatever their genders. When both directions are present, one person's Venus to the other's Mars and the reverse, attraction is mutual and both people take turns pursuing, which astrologers read as a stronger signature.
Is Venus square Mars good for attraction?
Venus square Mars is very good for attraction and harder for harmony. The square brings strong desire mixed with friction: different paces, different expectations and arguments that run as hot as the chemistry. It keeps a relationship lively. It lasts best alongside steadier contacts, such as Sun–Moon or Saturn contacts, and clear communication.
Can you have chemistry without Venus–Mars aspects?
Yes. Venus–Mars is the classic attraction contact, but strong chemistry also comes from contacts to the Ascendant, Sun–Moon conjunctions, and Pluto or Uranus touching Venus or the Moon. Many couples with intense attraction have no Venus–Mars aspect at all, which is why astrologers read the whole of both charts rather than one contact.
