The 7th House in Astrology: Partnership, Marriage and the Descendant
The 7th house rules partnership, marriage and every close one-to-one bond. Its sign, the Descendant, describes the qualities you look for in others and meet through them.

The 7th house in astrology rules partnership: marriage, committed relationships, business partners, close one-to-one friendships and open rivals. It begins at the Descendant, the point directly opposite your rising sign. Its sign shows the qualities you seek in other people, and the kind of person who feels like your natural counterpart.
The 1st house is you walking into the room. The 7th is the person you sit down across from. That might be a spouse, a business partner, the best friend you talk to every day, or the rival who brings out your sharpest work. The 7th house describes what you look for in those people, what you learn from them, and the parts of yourself you often first meet in someone else.
What the 7th house rules
The 7th house rules every relationship that happens one-to-one and by agreement. Its meanings have grown in layers over two thousand years, and knowing the layers explains a few of the stranger phrases you meet in astrology books.
- Hellenistic astrology (from about the 1st century BCE) read the 7th as marriage and sexual union, the spouse, travel abroad, and the later part of life.
- Medieval and early modern astrology widened it to partnership of every kind and added contracts, lawsuits, opponents and "open enemies". When the 17th-century astrologer William Lilly called them open, he meant known: the rival you can name, as opposed to the secret enemies of the 12th house. Chris Brennan calls the open-enemies meaning a later drift; it was never the whole story of the house.
- Modern psychological astrology reads the 7th as projection: the qualities we look for in, or see in, other people, often because we have not yet claimed them ourselves.
In a modern chart it covers:
- Marriage and long-term committed partnerships
- Business partners and formal collaborators
- Close one-to-one friendships with a sense of equal standing
- Contracts, agreements and negotiations
- Open rivals, competitors and the other side of a dispute
- Consultants, counsellors and anyone you hire to work with you one-on-one
What ties these together is the word other. The 7th is the house of the person who stands opposite you and reflects you back. Sitting across from the 1st house of self, it is where you learn who you are by working alongside someone else. The 12 houses guide shows how it fits with the rest of the wheel.
The Descendant
The Descendant is the degree of the zodiac that was setting on the western horizon at your birth, exactly opposite the Ascendant. Your rising sign describes how you meet the world; the Descendant describes what you go looking for in other people.
The two always sit in opposite signs. If you have Gemini rising, your Descendant is in Sagittarius. This creates a familiar pattern: we tend to be drawn to the qualities of our Descendant sign because they balance our own. The Gemini rising who talks quickly and widely often falls for someone with a big philosophy and a passport full of stamps.
In Placidus and other quadrant house systems, the Descendant is the cusp of the 7th house. In Whole Sign houses, the entire sign opposite your rising sign is the 7th house, and the Descendant degree falls somewhere inside it. Either way, the sign is the same. If you are not sure of your rising sign, start with the rising sign guide.
One popular claim is worth setting aside: your Descendant sign is not your future partner's Sun sign. It describes qualities you are drawn to and meet through other people. A partner may carry them through their rising sign, Moon, Venus or a planet that lands on your Descendant, as often as through their Sun.

Compare chartsPlanets in the 7th house
Planets in the 7th house show which energies you meet through partnership, and how central one-to-one relationships are in your life. A few quick reads:
- Sun: relationships are central to your sense of self; you shine in a pairing.
- Moon: you need emotional closeness and a partner who feels like home.
- Mercury: you bond through talk and value a partner who is also a good friend.
- Venus: you bring grace to partnership and value harmony and shared taste.
- Mars: you are drawn to energetic, direct people, and relationships carry heat and debate.
- Jupiter: you grow through partners, who often widen your world.
- Saturn: you take commitment seriously and value partnerships that build slowly and last.
- Uranus, Neptune, Pluto: you seek freedom, idealism or transformation in close bonds.
A planet's sign changes the tone, as the planet, sign and house formula shows. Saturn in Libra in the 7th feels different from Saturn in Scorpio there.
Two old fears deserve a straight answer. Planets in the 7th do not promise an early marriage, and an empty 7th does not rule one out. Mars in the 7th does not mean a violent partner either: it describes heat, directness and honest disagreement, and the planet's sign and aspects decide how that plays out. Even William Lilly, who wrote that a troubled Saturn or Mars here "show ill in marriage", judged them by their condition, never by their presence alone.
Reading your 7th house: a worked example
Say you have Virgo rising at 12°, so your Descendant is 12° Pisces, and Venus sits at 20° Pisces in the 7th house. Start with the Descendant sign: Pisces looks for gentleness, imagination and someone who meets you without judgement. Then the ruler: Pisces is ruled by Jupiter traditionally and Neptune in modern astrology. Suppose Jupiter is in Sagittarius in your 4th house; then partnership is tied to home, family and a shared sense of meaning. Last, the planet inside: Venus is exalted in Pisces, and in the 7th it brings warmth, devotion and a talent for making a partnership feel tender.
Put together: you are precise and helpful in your own manner, and you look for a partner who softens you, believes in something, and wants to build a home that feels generous. Every 7th house reads in this order: the sign, its ruler, then any planets inside.
5th vs 7th vs 8th house in love
The 5th, 7th and 8th houses all describe love, but each covers a different stage of closeness:
- 5th house: romance, flirting, dating, play and joy. It is the house of falling for someone. Traditionally it was "Good Fortune", the house of pleasure and children.
- 7th house: commitment and partnership, the agreement to stand side by side. This is the house that has meant marriage since the earliest sources.
- 8th house: intimacy, trust, shared resources and emotional merging. It is the house of letting someone all the way in. Older texts read it as inheritance and endings; its intimacy themes are largely modern.
A crush lives in the 5th, a partnership in the 7th, deep trust in the 8th. In synastry house overlays, another person's planets in any of these houses tend to be felt as romantic, committed or intense respectively.
Frequently asked questions
What does the 7th house represent in astrology?
The 7th house represents partnership and one-to-one relationships: marriage, committed couples, business partners, close friendships of equals, contracts and open rivals. It starts at the Descendant, opposite the Ascendant. Its sign and any planets there describe what you seek in other people and what you learn through them.
What is the 7th house ruler?
The 7th house ruler is the planet that rules the sign on your 7th house cusp. With a Taurus Descendant, it is Venus; with an Aquarius Descendant, it is Saturn in traditional astrology or Uranus in modern astrology. Its sign, house and aspects add detail to how you approach partnership and the kinds of people you tend to meet through it.
Does an empty 7th house mean no marriage?
No. An empty 7th house only means no planets sat there at your birth, which is true of several houses in every chart. Your partnerships are still described by the Descendant sign and its ruler: with a Leo Descendant, look to your Sun; with Libra there, to your Venus. The empty houses guide shows how to read any unoccupied house.
Why is the 7th house called the house of open enemies?
The 7th house is called the house of open enemies because medieval and early modern astrologers, William Lilly among them, gave it every person who stands opposite you, including declared rivals and the other side in a dispute. "Open" meant known by name, in contrast to the hidden enemies of the 12th house. It does not mean partners are enemies.
Is the 7th house only about romantic partners?
No. The 7th house covers any one-to-one bond built on agreement and equal standing. That includes spouses and partners, but also business partners, close friends you treat as equals, collaborators, and even open rivals. The common thread is a single other person who stands opposite you and reflects you back to yourself.
