Synastry House Overlays: When Their Planets Fall in Your Houses

A house overlay is where one person's planets land in the other's houses. It shows which part of your life someone lights up, and you read it in both directions.

By Celestio ·

A synastry house overlay is where one person's planets fall in the other person's houses. Aspects show how two charts talk to each other; overlays show where in your life that conversation happens. Their Venus in your 7th house is felt in partnership; the same Venus in your 10th is felt in your work and public life.

This is why two people can share the same aspects with you and still feel completely different. One friend's Moon sits in your 4th house and their kitchen feels like home. A sibling's Mars lands in your 3rd and every conversation turns into a debate. Overlays name the room each person walks into, and once you see it, a lot of old patterns make sense.

How to read a house overlay

You read an overlay by asking three questions: whose planet is it, which house does it fall in, and whose house is that. The planet belongs to the person who brings the energy. The house belongs to the person who feels it. If their Sun falls in your 5th house, they are shining a light on your fun, creativity and romance, and you are the one who feels warmed by it.

Every overlay runs in both directions, so a full reading has two halves:

  1. Place their planets in your houses. This shows how they affect your life.
  2. Place your planets in their houses. This shows how you affect theirs.
  3. Compare the two. Look for houses that light up both ways, such as their planets in your 7th and yours in their 7th.
  4. Check the aspects. An overlay tells you the setting; the aspects between the charts tell you the tone.

Comparing the two directions is the heart of the method. Astrologers read overlays to see whether two people agree on what the relationship is for: when both sets of planets land in each other's partnership and home houses, both people tend to expect the same thing.

Lopsided overlays are common and worth noticing. If their planets crowd your 1st, 5th and 7th houses while yours scatter through their 3rd and 11th, they may feel like a big event in your life while you feel, to them, like a good friend and an easy conversation. Neither half is wrong. They are simply two experiences of the same bond.

A quick note on cusps: a planet within a degree or two of the next house cusp is often felt in both houses. Some astrologers move it into the next house once it is within a few degrees; this article reads the house the planet actually sits in, and treats the next house as a strong neighbour.

The houses that matter most in relationships

The 1st, 5th, 7th and 8th houses carry the strongest charge in romance, with the 4th, 10th and 12th close behind. Every house has a story, and the 12 houses guide covers them all, but these are the ones people feel most.

1st house

Their planets here touch your sense of self and the way you show up. You feel seen by them, sometimes uncomfortably so. Friends with planets in your 1st often change your style, your posture or the way you introduce yourself.

5th house

The house of play, flirting, creativity and joy. Their planets here make time together feel light and a little giddy. It is classic early-romance territory, and it is just as strong in a friendship built on laughter.

7th house

The house of the committed one-to-one bond. Their planets here make them feel like a partner, a counterpart, the person across the table. It is one of the strongest signatures for a lasting pairing, in love or in business. The 7th house guide goes deeper.

8th house

Intimacy, trust, shared resources and the things you do not say at parties. Overlays here create intensity and a sense of being changed by someone. It asks for honesty, because both people feel exposed.

4th house

Home, family and emotional roots. Their planets here feel familiar, as if you have always known them. It describes family and the friend you would call at 2 a.m. as naturally as it describes a partner.

10th house

Career, reputation and direction. Their planets here shape your ambitions and how the world sees you. A mentor, or a partner who changes your path, often has planets here.

12th house

The hidden, the spiritual and the unspoken. Their planets here feel deep and hard to name, a bond that lives partly below the surface. A 12th-house overlay is not a warning sign: it can be tender and quietly healing, and it rewards clear words.

Houses for friends, family and work

The same method reads any two people; only the houses that matter most change. Friendships light up the 11th house of friends and groups. Siblings show strongly in the 3rd, the traditional house of brothers, sisters and everyday conversation. Colleagues and working partners show in the 6th (daily work) and the 10th (career and direction).

A short tour by planet

The planet tells you what kind of energy arrives; the house tells you where it lands. These five carry the most weight.

Sun

Their Sun lights up the house it falls in. You feel more alive and more visible in that area when they are around. Their Sun in your 10th, for example, often feels like someone who believes in your work.

Moon

Their Moon shows where they seek comfort with you, and where you feel their moods. Their Moon in your 4th is deeply domestic; in your 11th it is the friend who feels safest in a group. The Moon synastry guide adds the emotional side.

Venus

Their Venus shows where they bring affection, ease and pleasure into your life. In your 5th it is romance and fun; in your 2nd it is comfort and shared taste; in your 7th it is the quiet sense that this person belongs beside you.

Mars

Their Mars shows where they energise you and where they push. It brings drive, desire and sometimes friction. Mars in your 8th is magnetic; Mars in your 3rd can make every chat feel like a sparring match. Pair it with Venus–Mars synastry to see the full chemistry.

Saturn

Their Saturn shows where they bring structure, seriousness and commitment, and where you may feel judged or tested. In your 7th it can feel like a real promise. In your 1st it can feel like constant critique until you both learn the other's standards.

Compare charts

A worked example: mutual overlays

Say Sam's Venus falls in Alex's 7th house, and Alex's Moon falls in Sam's 4th house.

Sam's affection lands in Alex's house of partnership, so Alex experiences Sam as partner material: someone to build a life beside, not just someone fun. Alex's emotional nature lands in Sam's house of home, so Sam feels Alex belongs in their domestic life, at the kitchen table and at family dinners. Each person brings what the other's chart is looking for in the place it is looking for it. Astrologers read that kind of mutuality as agreement on what the relationship is for.

Now a caution from the same example. If Sam's Venus sits only 2° inside Alex's 7th house and Alex's birth time is uncertain by an hour, the overlay itself is uncertain: a small change in Alex's time could move that Venus back into the 6th. Overlays are only as reliable as the birth time of the person whose houses you are using.

Why both birth times are needed

Overlays depend on house cusps, and house cusps depend on the exact birth time. The Ascendant moves through the whole zodiac in about a day, an average of one degree every four minutes, faster or slower depending on the sign and the latitude of birth. Every house cusp moves with it. A birth time that is half an hour off can move a planet near a cusp into a different house.

The time you need is the house owner's. To place their planets in your houses you need your birth time; to place yours in their houses you need theirs. If only one time is known, you can read that half of the overlays and not the other. A full two-way reading needs both.

Some astrologers fall back on a solar chart, with the Sun placed on the Ascendant, when a time is missing. That is a different technique with its own logic, so it should be named as such rather than read as real houses. Without a birth time, the planets themselves still work: signs and most aspects stay readable, though the Moon's exact degree can be off by several degrees. The guide to charts without a birth time explains what stays reliable.

The house system matters too. Placidus and Whole Sign can place the same planet in different houses, especially near a cusp, so two charts read in different systems can give different overlays. Use the same system for both people.

Frequently asked questions

What are house overlays in synastry?

House overlays show where one person's planets fall in the other person's houses. The planet belongs to the person bringing the energy, and the house belongs to the person who feels it. Their Venus in your 7th house, for example, is felt as partnership. Overlays run both ways, so a full reading looks at their planets in your houses and yours in theirs.

Which house overlays matter most for a relationship?

The 1st, 5th, 7th and 8th houses carry the strongest charge in romance, covering self, play, partnership and intimacy. The 4th house matters for family and a sense of home, the 10th for shared direction, and the 12th for deep, hard-to-name bonds. The personal planets, especially Sun, Moon, Venus and Mars, landing in these houses tend to be felt most clearly.

Do house overlays matter more than aspects?

House overlays and synastry aspects answer different questions, so they work best together. Aspects describe how two people's energies interact: easily, with friction or with pull. Overlays describe where in each life that interaction is felt. A Venus–Mars trine tells you the chemistry flows; the houses tell you whether it shows up as romance, friendship, creative work or a shared home.

Can you read house overlays without a birth time?

House overlays need the birth time of the person whose houses you are reading. If you know your time but not theirs, you can place their planets in your houses, but not yours in theirs. Their Moon's degree can also be off by several degrees without their time. A solar chart is a separate fallback technique with its own logic, so read it as that rather than as real houses.

Seeing your own overlays

The first step is accurate birth times for both people, then both charts side by side. A compatibility report reads the two charts together: what draws you to each other, how each of you needs care and what holds the connection together. It works for a partner, a crush, a best friend, a parent or a sibling.
